Rutkowski,Thais; Schwingel,Paulo Ricardo; Brilha,Renan Todesco; Rodrigues-Ribeiro,Marcelo.
Arvoredo Island, located in Santa Catarina state - south Brazil, and its surrounding area were defined as a Conservation Unit (CU) in the category of Biological Reserve since 1990. This research aimed to analyze the inter-annual and seasonal (winter and summer) variations of ichthyoplankton densities at Arvoredo Biology Marine Reserve (ABMR), and their relationship with environmental variables in 1997/1998 (Campaign 1), 2007/2008 (Campaign 2) and 2008/2009 (Campaign 3). Fish eggs and larvae were sampled using a WP-2 net with 200 µm mesh size. The study area was influenced by three water masses, (i) Coastal Water throughout the whole year, (ii) Subtropical Shelf Water during the winter, and (iii) South Atlantic Central Water mainly in summer. A total of...

Impact of Brazilian fish species at early developmental stages on plankton communities and water chemical parameters Biological Sciences
Soares, Claudemir Martins; Hayashi, Carmino; Faria-Soares, Anna Christina Esper; Galdioli, Eliana Maria.
Effect of larvae of Astyanax altiparanae (AA), Piaractus mesopotamicus (PM), Leporinus obtusidens (LO) and Prochilodus lineatus (PL) on plankton communities and water quality were evaluated. Twenty 500 L tanks were used into a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications, containing 350 individuals of each species per tank. One treatment control had no larvae (CT). Every six days, were collected periphyton and water to determine the concentrations of chlorophyll and total phosphorus. Plankton samples (20 mm mesh net) were taken every three days. Fish affected plankton communities, which showed lower densities of total zooplankton in AA tanks than in LO tanks. Increased density of rotifers and reduced density of copepods were...

Impacts of three different microdiets on Florida Pompano, Trachinotus carolinus, weaning success, growth, fatty acid incorporation and enzyme activity. ArchiMer
Hauville, Marion; Zambonino, Jose Luiz; Bell, G; Migaud, Herve; Main, Kevan L..
In this study, three microdiets were tested on weaning of Florida pompano larvae: Otohime, Gemma and a reference diet LR803. The experimental system was stocked with 11-day-old larvae, which were co-fed micro-diets and live food from 11 dph to 17 dph then micro-diets only until 28 dph. Survival from 11 dph to 28 dph was similar for all treatments, with an average of 33%. At the end of the trial, the Gemma larvae were significantly longer and heavier than larvae fed the other diets. Significant differences were observed in fatty acid composition of the diets and larvae between treatments. The Gemma larvae incorporated the lowest amount of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA). However, they had the highest...

Influence of dietary live yeast on European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larval development ArchiMer
Tovar Ramirez, Dariel; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal; Gatesoupe, Joel; Vazquez Juarez, R.
Recent results have demonstrated that live yeast in diets improved gut maturation in sea bass larvae. In this study, we tested the absence and two levels of live yeast in sea bass larvae diets. Specimens were fed from time of mouth opening to 37 days after hatching a diet of 0%, 1.1%, or 5.7% wet weight of live yeast (Debaryomyces hansenii CBS 8339). Yeast incorporation improved survival 10%, and reduced malformed larvae. In groups fed 1.1% yeast, only 1% of larvae were malformed, compared to 14% in the control group. Final mean weight in groups fed 1.1% yeast was twice that of other groups. Activities and concentrations of mRNA trypsin and lipase were higher in the two groups fed yeast than in the control group, whereas activity and concentration of mRNA...

Influence of dietary phospholipids on early ontogenesis of fish ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal; Gisbert, Enric; Villeneuve, Laure A. N.; Morais, Sofia; Hamza, Neila; Wold, Per-avid; Zambonino, Jose-luis.
The aim of this paper is to provide explanations of how dietary phospholipid (PL) globally improves fish larval development, including growth and survival, digestive functions and skeletal development, and to propose optimal PL levels and sources in fish larval diets. Dietary incorporation of 8-12% PL related to dry matter (d.m.) promotes growth and enhanced survival in various species. Marine source PL, incorporating highly unsaturated fatty acids, was most efficient than soybean lecithin. This beneficial effect was explained by an enhancement in digestive functions, assessed by digestive enzyme activities and histomorphology. Nevertheless, 1.5-2.5% highly unsaturated fatty acids related to diet d.m. supplied by PL improved growth, survival and skeletal...

Larval Fish Swimming Behavior Alters Dispersal Patterns From Marine Protected Areas in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Faillettaz, Robin; Paris, Claire B.; Irisson, Jean-olivier.
Most demersal fishes undergo a dispersal phase as larvae, which strongly influences the connectivity among adult populations and, consequently, their genetic structure and replenishment opportunities. Because this phase is difficult to observe directly, it is frequently simulated through numerical models, most of which consider larvae as passive or only vertically migrating. However, in several locations, including the Mediterranean Sea, many species have been shown to swim fast and orient. Here we use a Lagrangian model to study connectivity patterns among three Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and compare simulations in which virtual larvae are passive to simulations in which oriented swimming is implemented. The parameterization of behavior...

Les larves de poissons téléostéens le long des côtes Est tunisiennes : distribution et abondance OceanDocs
Kochedi, W.; Hattour, A.; Said, K..

Live-food mediated drug delivery as a tool for disease treatment in larviculture: 2. A case study with European seabass OMA
Chair, M.; Romdhane, M.S.; Dehasque, M.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of oral delivery of the antibiotics Trimethoprim (TMP) and Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to marine fish larvae through incorporation of these antibiotics into the live food organism Artemia. SMX and TMP were selected for their wide range action against gram negative pathogenic bacteria and because of their limited solubility in seawater. Ormetoprim-Sulfadimethoxine (brand name Romet-30) is a new combination of a similar antimicrobial drug used in aquaculture. Diseased penaeid larvae fed Romet-30 through the food chain exhibited greater survival than the untreated ones. In an earlier study Verpraet have described a technique for bioencapsulating high doses of more than 500 mu g TMP +...

Microestructura de los otolitos Sagittae de larvas y juveniles de Merluccius hubbsi (Marini 1933): análisis comparativo entre las áreas de distribución bonaerense y norpatagónica OceanDocs
Buratti, C.C..
The life history of numerous aquatic organisms involves a pelagic larval stage, followed by a shift to a demersal or benthic existence (settlement) in the juvenile and adult stage. This transition and ecological, physiological and morphological changes frequently remain recorded like checks or marks in fish otoliths. As a contribution to the knowledge of hake (Merluccius hubbsi)life history, sagittae otoliths of larvae and juveniles with total length between 19 and 190 mm inhabiting North Patagonian and Bonaerensis waters in the Argentine sea (SW Atlantic)were analyzed. Using an image analysis system, otoliths microstructure was described and comparisons between left and right otoliths and between study areas in the following variables were realized:...

Morphological description of larvae of the Mapará Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix) (Osteichthyes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu reservoir (Parana River, Brazil) Zoologia
Nakatani,Keshiyu; Baumgartner,Gilmar; Latini,João Dirço.
The ontogenetic aspects of larvae of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) from the ichthyoplankton samples collected in the Itaipu reservoir between March 1988 and April 1990 were analysed. Sample were caught by 0.5 mm mesh conic-cylindrical plankton net. Larvae of H. edentatus were identified and described as Siluriforms from the morphological and morphometric development series. They have a small to medium-sized head, long body, small eyes, little pigmentation, mandibular barbules and 53 to 56 myomeres. High values obtained with correlation coefficient (r > 0.97; p < 0.001) show that growth was proportional in different parts of the body.

Morphological development of the mouth and improvement in feeding ability in the early larval stages of red porgy, Pagrus pagrus (L.) OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
The appearance, ossification and growth of cartilaginous structures of the mouth in early larval stages of laboratory reared red porgy Pagrus pagrus, were examined. At the time of mouth opening, red porgy larvae are equipped with the fundamental components of the oral cavity to allow the sucking motion for acquiring food. During the initial feeding stage, from day 5 after hatching (AH) to day 7 AH, the hyoid and lower branchial archs were completed, and the head length and other structural elements, like the ceratohyal-epihyal cartilage, increased rapidly. These events intensified sucking mechanisms by increasing the amount of ingested rotifers. After day 13 AH, the presence of the bony premaxilla and angular, the ossification of the Meckels cartilage and...

Nutrition, digestion et développement des larves de crevettes et poissons marins ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal.
This report is presented by Chantal Cahu for obtaining accreditation to supervise research. Since 1981, her research activity has addressed the study of reproducers' nutrition and the young stages of development of marine organisms belonging to two different branch lines, crustaceans and fish. This work, performed in a base-lined research body, IFREMER, is placed within a more general programme of aquaculture development. Indeed, whatever species are at issue, the development of aquaculture in France, as at the global level, is based on the production of juveniles in hatcheries. My work has therefore more precisely the goal of acquiring knowledge about the nutritional needs, mechanisms of digestion and the development of these animals in order to improve...
